The 700th anniversary locomotive has been produced at Lokomotiv Kurastyru Zauyty JSC (LKZ) in Astana, marking the dynamic development of Kazakhstan’s railway engineering industry and the expansion of the export geography of its products.

LKZ is located within Industrial Park No. 1 of the Astana – New City SEZ and is part of the international Wabtec Corporation group. The enterprise manufactures Evolution series locomotives. The plant’s production capacity is up to 120 locomotives per year, and the enterprise employs more than 530 people. Its products are supplied to Central Asian and CIS countries.

Wabtec’s direct investments in Kazakhstan have exceeded USD 230 million. The funds have been directed towards the development of production capacities, technology transfer, specialist training and the development of the supplier production site. Around 1,500 specialists are employed at the production and service facilities established around the enterprise.

One of the areas of the enterprise’s development is the introduction of digital technologies. The Trip Optimizer system is used on Evolution series freight locomotives, enabling optimized locomotive control, reduced fuel consumption and increased operational efficiency. Since 2024, the industrial-scale installation of the system across the entire fleet of Evolution series freight locomotives has been underway.

Particular attention is paid to personnel training. Wabtec provided the KTZ JSC training center with a locomotive simulator featuring virtual reality technology and an Evolution diesel engine model. To date, more than 1,000 Kazakhstanis have completed professional training at the center. Since 2011, more than 150 students have completed practical training directly at LKZ, ten of whom were subsequently employed by the enterprise.

145 industrial projects with a total value of more than KZT 369 billion are being implemented at Industrial Park No. 1, creating more than 7,000 permanent jobs.
